Kyiv to L'viv

We are headed to L'viv tonight and going to head to Crimea first thing Friday morning. Kyiv has been absolutely amazing. Fashion here is it's own definition. I think most of the clothing I have seen people wearing would land you in jail in most countries. The people have been really warm, the beer really cold, and the food cheap, delicious, and plentiful. We have been eating almost entirely in cafeterias and riding around in cattle cars. We have been visiting monasteries, churches, and reconstructed villages. It has been great, I would love to come back and spend more time here someday... but I am ready for the beach now.

Ukraine

After nearly 44 hours of travel, we made it to Kiev last night. Our first leg of the journey (the train to Slovakia)- (12 hours) we were forced to pay extra money of course. Our second leg (a bus ride into Uzhgorod) -(4 hours) was cancelled and we were forced to wait for another bus in which we had to negotiate our tickets. We got across (with a giant bag of sausages) and safely managed both border crossings. Our last leg (train from Uzhgorod to Kiev) - (17 hours) was fun. A giant train car full of hardboiled eggs, fried chicken, and lots of stinky feet.

Upon arrival in Kiev, we were able to meet our contact and make our way to the Panelak we are staying at. It is everything I ever imagined and more!!!!!!

...It's been a long time

...but my sister came to visit and I figured she deserved her very own post.

AND...Rather than filling up space with requite excuses pertaining to health, happiness, and the weather over the past 3 months, I figured a few happy smiling faces should make up for lost time.

Besides, I am heading to Ukraine tomorrow for 14 days with Natasha and should have plenty of stories to share once I get back.

Form over Function

Most of the time, when we buy some new piece of technology, we brace for a bit of a learning curve. Most of the time it is apparent that the proliferation of "function as quantity" overshadows both design and "user friendliness"
...enter Mac.
Mac has been able to succeed in the market (winning even my own heart) due to its ability to listen to people and make products that are stylish, relevant, and easy to use. In an age where visual communication has conquered the written, it was inevitable that someone was going to produce a line of products navigable by the use of pictures and icons. Despite the high cost of owning their products, I have come to both believe in and trust Mr. Jobs. In fact, I might even go so far as to call him a friend. This being said, I experienced a twitter of doubt last week when Apple unveiled its new "shuffle." Small, sleek, and stylish it is...but functional? I just don't know. Sometimes the pendulum swings hard back to the other direction. It seems to me like design has now managed to conquer function. When something as simple as a music player ceases to have any buttons whatsoever, relying on special headphones in order to work, user friendliness suddenly becomes user complexity. It may look and seem simple from the video link below....but I am not so sure. Making one into two...well, a house divide upon itself cannot stand! Besides, I hate ear buds. I must have mishapen ear holes, because all they want to do is fall out.
I know, I know.. "If I don't like the product, I don't have to buy it."
I am just a bit concerned that this shuffle could become an "apple indicator species." - like frogs and acid rain, or soft shelled eggs and D.D.T.

Perhaps I am overreacting....I hope I am overreacting.

I suddenly feel the need to write a letter...

Check out this link and decide for yourself.

Perhaps the onion was not so far off when they created the commercial for the Mac Wheel

O' Death

I saw the band O Death play last night at 007 in Strahov.

Amazing....

Seriously, I have not had so much fun at a show in a long, long time.

The intensity of the whole show from start to finish was incredible.  I have no idea how they fueled themselves, but whatever it was they have tapped into something really, really, special.
Who knew you could produce so much sweat in winter with a banjo, violin, bass, guitar, and drum kit?
The music bridged an incredible musical gap: folk, bluegrass, rock, and punk spilled forth from every song.
The drummer played as if he were in  megadeath circa 1985, the fiddle player forgot that he was holding a violin most of the time and played it like a proverbial "red headed step child," the vocals wavered between harmony and chaos, and the banjo....who knew?  who knew?

If you get a chance to see them play.  Go!  Just go and dance your pants off.  Go and sweat through your clothing.  Go and scream until you are horse. Just don't go and lurk in a corner...that's just creepy.
